Standard Operating Procedure for Determining Total Lead (Pb) in Children’s Metal Products (Including Children’s Metal Jewelry)
This method is used to determine lead content in metals components of children’s products and children’s jewelry. TTL Laboratories maintains ISO 17025 accreditation for, and is also a CPSC-accepted laboratory to perform this test. The procedure includes digesting the metal material in acid, followed by analysis on an instrument, to determine how much total lead is present. The instruments we use to analyze the digested sample are Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES, also known as ICP-AES or Atomic Emission Spectrometry) and Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results are then compared to the limit of 100 ppm of lead in each metallic material, to determine if the component is compliant.
