“Standard Operating Procedure for Determining Total Lead (Pb) in Nonmetal Children’s Products”

This method is used to determine lead content in non-metal components of children’s products and jewelry. TTL Laboratories maintains ISO 17025 accreditation for, and is also a CPSC-accepted laboratory to perform this test. The sample material is first reduced to a small particle size or powder, then, one of two types of digestion procedures are used, depending on the material from which the component is made. Polymeric, or plastic materials are digested with nitric acid in a pressurized vessel. The digestion procedure for siliceous materials (glass, crystal and ceramic) uses both nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid. The prepared samples are then analyzed via Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES, also known as ICP-AES or Atomic Emission Spectrometry), to determine the concentration of lead in the sample. The final results are then compared to the CPSIA limit of 100 ppm of lead in each non-metal component.
